Both dates depend on the sighting of the crescent moon, so the final announcement comes from your local Ruet-e-Hilal committee.

Notice the spread: Iftar in Kolkata comes well before Iftar in Mumbai, because all of India uses one time zone across a very wide country. That is why a timetable for your own city matters.

These are calculated times (Sehri at the 18° Fajr angle used by most Indian masjid timetables, Iftar at sunset). They can differ from your masjid’s timetable by a minute or two, so always follow your local masjid.

What Ramadan means

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, the month in which the Qur’an was first revealed. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, give charity, read the Qur’an and pray Taraweeh at night. The month is traditionally seen in three parts, or ashras: the first ten days of mercy (Rehmat), the next ten of forgiveness (Maghfirat) and the last ten of protection from the Fire (Nijat), which contain Laylatul Qadr.

Ramadan 2027 falls in February

The Islamic calendar is lunar, so Ramadan arrives about 10–11 days earlier each year. In 2027 it falls in February and March, during the cooler months in most of India. Fasts will be shorter than in summer Ramadans. Depending on the city and the day, Sehri ends between about 4:40 and 6:00 a.m. and Iftar falls between about 5:30 and 6:50 p.m.

How to prepare your masjid for Ramadan 2027

  • Test the sound system well before Ramadan: amplifier, minar horns and microphones.
  • Prepare the Sehri and Iftar siren. If your masjid still uses a motor siren on the roof, check it early, or replace it with an electronic siren that plays through the amplifier you already have.
  • Check the inverter. Power cuts at Sehri are common, and both the amplifier and the siren should run on backup.
  • Print the timetable for your city and agree who sounds the siren each day. Our guide to the Iftar and Sehri siren has a simple routine.
